Taken from The Wire - April 2002

Derek John GAY - joined the Royal Corps of Signals in February 1960 and trained as a Communications Centre Operator at 24th Signal Regiment.

A volunteer for Airborne Forces, Derek left Catterick for Aldershot where he successfully completed parachute selection at Maida and was taken on the strength of 216 Signal Squadron (Parachute Brigade Group) - later designated 216 Parachute Signal Squadron. Immensely proud of the time he spent with the Corps' regular airborne unit, in later life, Derek was to became a founder member and Chairman of the Tameside Parachute Regimental Association.

Throughout his 18 years in the Corps, Derek saw service in Malaya, Singapore, Germany and with the United Nations in Cyprus.

Ill health forced his early retirement and at home in Manchester, whenever the need arose, he engaged himself with charity work as a case worker with SSAFA.

Derek's sudden death shortly after his 60th birthday came as a great shock to all who knew this selfless, sincere and dedicated man.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Lorraine and to the remainder of his family who survive him.
